Some people might see a communication operation: positive offsets negative ad. The reality is quite different. Alstom is the epitome of the company torn between its success abroad and disappointments in France.

For the group, who returned in the green of its 2015-2016 financial year after the resale the energy division at General Electric – profit of 3 billion euros – is rolling now much better abroad than in France. The fiscal crisis has been there. Fewer orders from the train or from the state and 12 Alstom French sites will see their workload decrease by almost 40% by 2018

Add to this competition. A SNCF subsidiary recently ordered 44 diesel locomotives to a German manufacturer. This is the game of public procurement but it hurts.

Full pot internationally

This is the strategy pursued by the new head of Alstom, Henri Poupart-Lafarge, who took over from Patrick Kron after the resale of the energy business to General Electric: not only sell trams or trains but also the services that go with it

Very popular internationally because emerging countries do not control, service contracts and maintenance possible today to generate higher margins than the sale of hardware. But these are by definition of offshore markets

Eg. Pandolino trains and maintenance in Italy; locomotive maintenance in Azerbaijan; signaling systems and 800 locomotives sold to India for 3 billion euros; American mega-contract with Liberty Avelia TGV (95% maintenance of the equipment sold is produced in Northern New York); extension of the Dubai Metro, etc.

The future TGV. a salvation for Alstom in France

The innovation partnership with SNCF? strengthen technological showcase Alstom but manufacturing is not expected before 2022. in the water will still flow under the bridge and it will not be enough to save the Belfort site.

and then by then, there will be a new government, possibly a new president. Enough to mention the visit of former Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron, who had assumed responsibility for Alstom which the state still holds 20% stake.
