Ratatouille, cream of mushroom, fried vegetables, cabbage stew, gazpacho, fried potatoes … spicy aromas of the dishes simmering in large pots have embalmed Guesde alleys all day yesterday. To 13 hours, more than 1,200 meals had been distributed as part of the first “Banquet 5000″ in Toulouse. The service continued until 18 hours. This festive operation to raise awareness of the food waste, organized by the associations France Nature Environnement and Disco soup was a real success. We had to be patient to reach the distribution point (half an hour queue at the height of the rush), but no one complained. “This is a great initiative. It shows that with what wastes can feed a lot of people. I am pleased to see that young people are moving to raise awareness, “observes Marie, a retired met in the middle of the crowd of guests of all ages. Not needy people but the citizens in environmental issues. They were nearly two hundred volunteers have mobilized to prepare this great free banquet. I nearly 8 tons of unsold goods were collected from supermarkets and shops of the city. By Friday evening, an outdoor kitchen was installed in tents on the alleys Guesde. The teams took turns to sort fruits and vegetables, wash, peel, cut, cook out there and do the service. Among them, Kevin, a chemical engineer at INRA in Toulouse installed for two months. “There is a big awareness work to do if we want to try and reduce food and agricultural waste,” observed the young man busy with a huge stir fried tomato zucchini. “I’m happy to participate, he said. The atmosphere is very nice, we discuss, we encounter many different people. ” The guests could extend by around various stalls to discover Toulouse other initiatives such as Food Swap’ers, network sharing of dishes and recipes, Caravan’Olla, alternative event agency, taste and festive, microbrewery Ostrich, or the Reclassified Cute, snacks organizer and anti-gaspis games.
