PARIS (Reuters) – Engie Group (formerly GDF Suez) could take a stake in Areva to create a large international group in the field of nuclear maintenance services, said Saturday the CEO to Engie.
Gérard Mestrallet recalled on Europe 1 that the two groups were already partners with Engie including seven nuclear power plants in Belgium.
“There is a part of Areva’s activities, especially in the field of nuclear maintenance services internationally, which would make a nice combination with ours and this could possibly be done, “he said.

These statements come at a time that EDF has made official Tuesday its intention to redeem the activity of nuclear reactors Areva, while considering that this project could be realized at a price “market” and with guarantees related to liabilities from its supplier.
Gerard Mestrallet had already mentioned in the Financial Times on Friday a Engie-Areva merger as a joint venture but without a real asset purchase of French nuclear group in difficulty.
Engie declared early May be interested in certain activities of Areva, without specifying which ones.
Areva said on Thursday not to try to defend his “backyard” but he would ensure that all assets sold as part of its rescue plan is “good valued”.
