The information was given by the group itself, in a press release issued late Saturday afternoon. His wife Ursula Piëch, a member of the supervisory board of Volkswagen, has also resigned.

This information comes after two weeks of struggle for power at the head of Europe’s largest carmaker. Ferdinand Piëch himself had caused the crisis Friday, April 10, declaring the magazine Der Spiegel “having distanced himself (Mr.) Winterkorn” , CEO since 2007. He aspired to take over from Mr Piëch to the Supervisory Board, after years of close collaboration that has made the second Volkswagen automotive group in the world. Mr Piëch, apparently disappointed his former protégé performance, wished his departure from the group.

But Martin Winterkorn, supported by several influential members of the Supervisory Board, obtained Thursday, April 16, maintaining it at his position as COO of the group, inflicting a stinging defeat Ferdinand Piëch. The latter, after attempting to impose its will through other channels these days, apparently conceded defeat. The conflict could not go on forever: May 5 held a general meeting of shareholders, where the two men in conflict should have been sitting at the podium side by side

According to the magazine. Der Spiegel , several members of the supervisory board said Friday that maintaining Piëch as President of the proceeding was no longer possible, after he continued his attempts to remove Mr. Winterkorn .

His resignation marks the end of an era at Volkswagen: grand-son of the creator of the Beetle Ferdinand Porsche, the origin of the group, Mr. Piëch had spent his entire career in a simple engineer Chairman of the Supervisory Board.

The automotive group with 12 brands must decide in the coming months that will occupy the seats of Chairman of the Supervisory Board and Chairman of the Board, which will be vacant by April 2017.
